A 170-year-old cricket ball made by Philip Wickham is one of the 100 objects that helped make the county of Kent, and it is proudly displayed in the Tunbridge Wells museum.
Today, Wickham’s legacy is commemorated by Brookworth Homes as the name for the style of house on two of the most substantial plots of the Rocks Hollow development in Southborough, ready for occupation this autumn with the show home and Wickham view home opening on the 14th of July.
Southborough produced the finest, truest cricket balls in wooden buildings in leafy Speldhurst Road on the edge of the town, where Wickham and his business partner Joseph Smith were based. Their success and reputation led to the arrival of other ball-makers, officially known as quiltwinders, among them John Martin and Thomas Twort. By the middle of the 19th century it seemed the entire town was employed in manufacturing cricket equipment.
Mirroring Wickham’s world-acclaimed craftsmanship, Brookworth Homes have adopted the name for two of their Rocks Hollow homes; imposing, high-specification new-builds spread over three floors and including master bedroom suites which look out on to the wooded beauty of the Kent countryside.
Each is set on a substantial site with detached garage with electric doors, built-in alarms, secluded grounds, and a large open-plan kitchen/dining/living area, perfect for family life and entertaining. Built to Brookworth’s high standards, the homes cost from £885,000, with a 10-year comprehensive warranty, energy-efficient double glazing and ground-floor underfloor heating.
Yet the homes would not look out of place to Philip Wickham. Brookworth’s brief was to create houses which blend the architectural traditions of the area with the needs of modern families; a look combining a time-honoured appearance on the outside with the latest innovation inside. Exclusive and serene, the Wickham detached homes are the kingpins in a nine-home close; forming a mini community and representing the skills of fine craftsman using local building materials.
Come and take a look at the Rocks Hollow show home – a great opportunity to experience the quality of the homes ready for family living. Show home and the Wickham view home are open on Saturday the 14th July with viewings by appointment only.
