Is Kent's Southborough a Commuters Best Kept Secret?

For those looking to escape the city and settle down in the countryside without losing out on the best of metropolitan life, the Kent town of Southborough could be the perfect solution. With a great combination of open space, fine dining, strong community spirit and numerous outstanding schools, as well as fast transport into London, it’s an attractive proposition.

Southborough is the location for Rocks Hollow: a fabulous new development of nine high-quality properties from Brookworth Homes. Not familiar with the area? Here are some of the top spots:

Southborough’s top spots

On the doorstep of Rocks Hollow is Southborough Common. The Common plays host to local cricket matches in the summer and expands into 85 acers of woodland. From bluebells in spring to a wide selection of fungi in autumn, the Common represents the English countryside in all its glory. At night the Common comes alive with bats and tawny owls swooping amongst the trees whilst roe deer, hedgehogs and badgers emerge to forage for food. Follow the woodland tracks or stick to the surfaced paths as there is access for all ages and abilities.

Rocks Hollow itself overlooks the rolling hills of the Kent countryside, so taking in the natural world is as easy as looking out of your back windows.

Dining and drinks

Just a stone’s throw from Rocks Hollow is the Hand & Sceptre, a friendly pub combining bar conviviality with a great selection of menus – vegans welcome. The pub is a five minute walk from Rocks Hollow and overlooks Southborough Common. We recommend grabbing a drink in the summer and watching a game of cricket on the Common.

A true gastronomic experience is just another five minutes away at chef Scott Goss’s test kitchen The Twenty Six – just 26 covers and a menu that changes daily. For something a little spicier, Thai Lemongrass offers a taste of East Asia at a reasonable price. The classic Pad Thai is delicious but Ped Gra Tiem Prigthai (stir-fried duck) is unbeatable.

Something for the kids

The numerous OFSTED outstanding rated schools in Southborough are an obvious draw for families, but holidays are catered for too, with a range of activities to suit all talents.

The earliest recorded cricket match in the history of Southborough Cricket Club is 1794 and the tradition of playing on the ground is still going strong. Welcoming players of all ages and ability the club is the perfect training ground for future fielders and blossoming batters. For those with their eyes on the Premier League, Tunbridge Wells Youth Football Club welcomes boys and girls from all ages to join in for a kick around and can be found on the Southborough/Tunbridge Wells border.

Budding ballerinas and ballerinos may prefer The Southborough School of Dance: evolving from a small nucleus of enthusiasts, the school has grown from strength to strength in popularity and reputation, now offering Modern, Tap and Jazz as well as Ballet. Anyone with twinkle toes is very welcome.

For brand new parents looking for support and camaraderie the Southborough Children's Centre will be a lifeline, offering free activities for adults and children to play, learn and have fun together.

Specialist shopping on your doorstep

This leafy quarter of Kent combines the great outdoors with convenience too: local shopping includes both supermarket choices at Tesco Express and great local produce at family-run Southborough Butcher Shop. To add vintage class to your décor, Peter Hoare Antiques is a real treasure trove while four-footed family members are catered for at Pets Fayre.

Just a quick trip around Southborough is enough to prove why Kent so often tops the best commuter county lists, whether it is fine dining, local produce, long walks or frantic tap dancing this friendly town has so much to offer. We’ve had a good dig but we are certain you will uncover more when you step out of the door at Rocks Hollow.
